CHAPTER 22
T he same rain pattered outside, only the man didnât know it because he was underground. What he did know was that his real name was CampâTim Camp. They thought he was Michael Walters, but he wasnât. That was part of his cover. His employer had given him the Walters name and set him up as an auditor working freelance with the State of Missouri. He had come to see this company's books and inspect its files, like a normal auditor would do. He did have a Masters in Accounting degree. That part was true. He knew what he was looking for.
Camp was no tough-guy. He wasnât a cop, and had no experience in Special Forces or anything, but he was no novice with a gun or in hand-to-hand combat. None of that mattered when they came for him though. He met Junior first, and then Franklin. They didnât know who he really was. The switchmen didnât know who he was either. In order to achieve the goals his employer had set out for him, he needed complete anonymity. No one could know who he was, not until the job was complete.
The name Michael Walters was fake. So was the cover story of being a state auditor coming to check the books of Black River Rail. But the auditing part was real. The purpose of the audit was to find the truth. Thereâs always a certain level of danger in auditing criminal organizations. Thereâs danger in dealing with criminals to begin with. That part was common sense. But in a decade of auditing criminals, Camp never had things go this wrong.
If auditing was about finding truth, then Camp was a truth-seeker. His success rate was top in his field. Thatâs why he had found consistent work across the northern hemisphere, working for criminal organizations, finding the gaps in their books for them. It was lucrative too. There were not a lot of people in his field, probably because it was both little-known and dangerous.
Most of his work had been with drug cartels. When cartel leaders in Mexico figured out they were losing money somewhere along the chain from the plants being cared for in Colombia to the dealers on the streets of American cities, they knew someone was stealing from them. Naturally, they had expected this. It was the cost of doing business. Especially when all along the pipeline they dealt with criminals. When everyone in your criminal empire was a criminal by definition, theft was inevitable. They factored it in.
The problem was that someone was taking dollar amounts higher than what was factored in. The infraction was fine for a while, but the thief got greedy. The amount of money vanishing got too high. It ate into their profit margins. And this was unacceptable. So they hired Camp to find the source of the theft. He came in as a government agent, as an auditor with the Mexican governmentâs Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera, its financial intelligence unit. The UIF's main responsibility was investigating money-laundering and other financial crimes.
